Celebrating 10 years of the IFRA UK Fragrance Foundation

Dr Jenny Tillotson and eScent feature in a new book that cover themes including wellbeing, health, psychology, innovation, business, technology, design, creativity and culture. The book offers a reflective celebration of the IFRA Fragrance Forum, allowing readers to dip into the ideas presented by past  IFRA speakers through ten years of global olfactory research.

Dr Tillotson joins the CISL accelerator programme at the University of Cambridge to fast track resilience in times of disruption. The program is open to early-stage start-ups and entrepreneurs with innovations like eScent that build resilience in one of three areas: business continuity; socially inclusive services; or environmental protection.

Prior to establishing her consultancy she was full Professor of Psychology at London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London, where she created the Psychology department and devised the world's first Masters programmes to apply psychology within the broad context of fashion. Carolyn has been published widely in academic and business journals and is frequently featured in press and media. Her book, The Psychology of Fashion, part of the Psychology of Everything series, was published by Routledge in 2018. Carolyn holds a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience, MSc Research Methods Psychology and BSc (Hons) Applied Psychology and Computing.

Pymposia feature eScent product patent and ask if a liquid-delivery system meant to help maintain a personalized “scent bubble” could quietly usher in the creation of wearable psychedelic microdosing technology. A PCT patent for this system—just one among an increasing list of psychedelic-inspired intellectual properties—was filed by Sensory Design & Technology LTD in 2019.

eScent is sad to report of the passing of Joanna Norman. 

Jo was a great campaigner for eScent and Jenny Tillotson's work over two decades, since first supporting her PhD at the Royal College of Art (as VP of IFF London) and later as a close advisor, work colleague, friend and partner on the AHRC Impact and Engagement award . 

Jo's passing will leave a huge loss for eScent as moves to the next step and many people in fragrance education and the industry.

Title: Storage and controlled release of fragrances maintaining a constant ratio of volatile compounds

​

Controlled fragrance release at the right time, in the right place, depending on the context remains a technological challenge in the areas of psychophysiology, biochemistry or entertainment industry. In this study, we demonstrate how bulk poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) templates may effectively uptake and keep volatile organic compounds of essential orange oil in the original form without significant shifting of the scent profile depending on the sampling approaches followed by the controllable and slow fragrance release maintaining constant ratio of volatile compounds in a template-thickness, temperature- and time- dependent manner. Thus, the increase of temperature up to 80 °C enhances intensity of the fragrance release almost in 13 times without a significant shift in the chemical profile at least within 6 consecutive “ON/OFF” cycles. We believe that the concept demonstrated here towards fragrance storage via bulk PDMS templates as a model case may have an impact on the use of scent in the future.

eScent has made it through to pitch day on 8th June 2016 for the 2016 John Lewis JLab incubator. Team members include Joanna Norman from Pandora, Dr Carolyn Mair from London College of Fashion and Hugh Parnell, amongst other advisors.

An Innovation Voucher is award to develop ideas, concepts for an improved prototype of the eScent targeted, stimulus-triggered dispensing technology.
